RV Tips for Camping with Babies & Toddlers

Get your little one’s love for camping started early – and started right in a new or used RV! Many new parents wonder if they’ll need to put a pause on their traveling, but there’s no reason to stop towing your RV once you have little ones in tow, too. Here are a few RV tips for camping with toddlers and babies that can help your road trip stay comfortable for everyone.

RV Safety Packages

Make sure your RV’s safety package is updated – or ask us about these features when shopping for one! Standard features included in safety packages consist of things like smoke & carbon monoxide detectors and a fire extinguisher, and if you already have these in your RV, make sure you have fresh batteries in all detectors.

RV Tips

Additionally, get to know your fire extinguisher. Fire extinguishers have an expected minimum lifespan of 5 years. However, it’s a good idea to have them inspected/refueled if needed every six years, and replaced every 10-15 years – depending on when its expiration date is.

We can make sure your RV has features like an electronic braking system or rear backup camera prep. And if you’ve got your eye on one of our motorhomes for sale, you’ll want to double check the seatbelt accommodations to make sure there are not only enough for everyone, but that they can accommodate any car seats you need to bring along.

You babyproof your home – so your home on wheels needs the same treatment. Babies and toddlers are curious, and there may be an increase in that curiosity when it comes to exploring a new territory like the inside of your RV. Make sure to store all gear that could pose a safety hazard (like fishing gear, cleaning supplies, hatchets, first aid kit, etc.) in your RV’s exterior pass-through storage.

Update Your Gear

Take a look at the baby gear you have. Is it ready for a camping trip? If you plan on doing nature walks, hiking, or biking, you’ll need baby gear that’s designed for extended outdoor activity.

RV Tips

Consider adding or upgrading to the following items based on your outdoor interests:

  • 3-wheeled off-road stroller
  • Pull-behind bike trailer
  • Backpack-style baby carrier

One of the best ways to make sure you have enough space for your essential gear is to consider shopping, trading, or upgrading to a toy hauler. You’ll find plenty of space in the rear garage for your kiddo’s essentials, and many of our toy haulers for sale include an optional enclosed ramp patio system – perfect for letting your little one enjoy time outside in an enclosed space!

Stay on Schedule

Part of the beauty of camping is the freedom and flexibility you enjoy – but remember that kids, babies, and toddlers thrive on some sort of routine. Snacks and naps are two features in a routine that shouldn’t be disrupted. Work around naptimes when scheduling your outings for the day, and keep extra snacks on hand. Your little one may also be overstimulated in a new environment, so be mindful if an early bedtime is needed. One of our RVs with a bunkhouse can give you the perfect quiet space for your child to go to sleep before others turn in for the night.
